We have not had the luxury of being able to gradually adapt to this \u2018new normal\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A part of this new normal is the necessity to conduct business, which can be done virtually, online. Owing to this new digital business model, traditional forms of marketing can\u2019t be adopted \u2013 they\u2019ve got to be digital.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is traditional marketing dead?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Over the past two months, we\u2019ve seen two long-standing publishing houses close their doors owing to the added pressures put on them from COVID-19:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Associated Media Publishing \u2013 which published the likes of House &amp; Leisure as well as Cosmopolitan \u2013 closed its doors on 1 May.<\/li>\n<li>Caxton \u2013 publishers of titles such as Farmers Weekly and Bona \u2013 has decided to close their entire magazine division.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The reasons for these closures, which have been widely cited in the media, are lack of advertiser spend in addition to the prolonged closure of printers and distributors during the hard lockdown which South Africa experienced during April.<\/p>\n<p>Although this closes off a large chunk of one avenue of traditional marketing \u2013 in other words, magazine advertising \u2013 it must be remembered that there are still other forms of traditional marketing which don\u2019t require advertising spend to keep them afloat.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-video align_none ratio_16x9 has_iframe\"><div class=\"w-video-h\"><iframe title=\"Vimeo video player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/285960951?autoplay=0&loop=0&autopause=0&color=00adef&portrait=0&byline=1&title=1&controls=1&muted=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/div><div class=\"w-video-icon\" style=\"font-size:1.5rem;background:rgba(0,0,0,0.5);color:#fff\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_medium\"><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>The traditional marketing types in the list below will carry on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Direct sales (although this will probably take place via channels such as Zoom until the threat of COVID-19 has passed),<\/li>\n<li>Referrals (or word-of-mouth marketing),<\/li>\n<li>Television, as well as<\/li>\n<li>Radio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Marketing is both an art and science. There are scientific principles that have been developed by household names in marketing, such as the 4Ps and 3Cs, which are still in use today and are as applicable to digital marketing as they are to traditional marketing. It is an art because it is very dependent on the influences of buyer behaviour and the economic landscape (as we\u2019ve seen with the Coronavirus).
