A brand that\u2019s worth something, is worth something either because you can sell more of it or make more of a profit for each one you sell. That\u2019s it. If you can\u2019t sell more, or can\u2019t get a premium, you don\u2019t have a brand. Cause people aren\u2019t showing up investing their emotion in what it is you sell.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><em>Seth Godin<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Many people will have a very simplistic notion of what a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalschoolofmarketing.co.za\/blog\/pick-perfect-influencer-for-your-brand\/\">brand<\/a>\u2019 is. Some people may think that a brand is merely a logo or a tagline. Yes, these elements do play a very key role in how a customer recognises a product and\/or service.\u00a0 However, these are not the be-all-and-end-all of what a brand actually is. And it is the task of the brand manager to make sure that the brand is managed correctly.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a brand?<\/h2>\n<p>A brand does indeed consist of what a product and\/or service looks like. However, a brand is also about the feelings and associations that a customer has about the particular product and\/or service that the product covers. Let\u2019s take McDonald&#8217;s, as an example. Yes, the golden arches are an iconic symbol of this fast-food chain. However, the McDonalds brand also consists of what its customers think about the brand and why \u2013 when they want a particular food \u2013 the first place that they think of is McDonald&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A brand manager protects a brand\u2019s reputation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalschoolofmarketing.co.za\/blog\/difference-created-and-curated-content\/\">brand<\/a> is nothing unless it can maintain \u2013 in the minds of their customers \u2013 the reputation that they will deliver on the promises that they make to their target audience. If the customers begin to feel that the company is no longer delivering on the services that they promise to offer, they will soon go elsewhere. And, it\u2019s very likely that once this happens that the customers will stay here depending on whether your competitor ends up impressing them and meeting their needs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-video align_none ratio_16x9 has_iframe\"><div class=\"w-video-h\"><iframe title=\"Vimeo video player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/267572321?autoplay=0&loop=0&autopause=0&color=00adef&portrait=0&byline=1&title=1&controls=1&muted=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/div><div class=\"w-video-icon\" style=\"font-size:1.5rem;background:rgba(0,0,0,0.5);color:#fff\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_medium\"><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>A good example of this is a car. If a person has a particular make of car, and this vehicle constantly gives the individual problems \u2013 so much so that the car spends months upon months at the mechanic \u2013 it is very likely that the person will be turned off that particular brand of car and may even try to convince his or her friends and colleagues not to buy that particular brand of car. Now, this problem may just have been inherent in the particular car that the person had but, as a result of the inefficiencies of that particular car, the individual will never buy the brand of car again.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>If a brand\u2019s reputation is damaged, can it be rescued?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So, if it happens that a <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalschoolofmarketing.co.za\/blog\/what-does-brand-manager-do\/\">brand\u2019s<\/a> reputation is damaged is this tickets? Does it mean that the business must pack up shop and try something else?<\/p>\n<p>Absolutely not! Sometimes things do happen and that a brand takes some hits to its reputation. A recent story springs to mind of a well-known South African retail chain. An entrepreneur had presented their product to them, in the hope that the chain would start to stock the particular product. The chain decided against stocking the product however, a couple of months later the entrepreneur found a product \u2013 which was almost identical to hers \u2013 being stocked by the retailer. What\u2019s worse is that the product was branded as an in-house product of the retailer.<\/p>\n<p>This action sparked a major outcry in the media \u2013 especially from other small medium enterprises (SMEs).
