As being a social media marketing is a very lucrative career to get into these days, we thought that we\u2019d unpack exactly what this term means.<\/p>\n<h2>What is marketing?<\/h2>\n<p>In their book entitled <em>Marketing Management <\/em>(which has now become a staple resource on marketing courses), Philip Kotler and Kevin Lane Keller define \u2018marketing\u2019 as the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Marketing<\/strong> deals with identifying and meeting human and social needs \u2026 \u2018meeting needs profitably\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American Marketing Association (AMA) also has also thrown their hat into the ring when it comes to proposing a definition of \u2018marketing\u2019. The AMA states that\u00a0 marketing is \u201c\u2026 an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stake holders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s key here in terms of our discussion about social media marketing is \u2018communicating\u2019. Marketing is all about communicating a company\u2019s brand message to their audience so that these audience members will respond well to what is being said and will ultimately buy what the company is offering.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The crux of social media marketing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Given that the nucleus of marketing is all about communication, social media marketing is simply about using the medium of social media to communicate a brand, product and\/or service message.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s crucial with respect to marketing on <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalschoolofmarketing.co.za\/blog\/what-type-of-social-media-content-converts-best\/\">social media<\/a> is that the correct channel needs to be chosen to broadcast your company\u2019s message. If you end up disseminating your message on the wrong channel, you\u2019ll waste the time, budget and effort that you\u2019ve spent on developing your campaign because the social media audience won\u2019t respond to what you\u2019re putting out.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-video align_none ratio_16x9 has_iframe\"><div class=\"w-video-h\"><iframe title=\"Vimeo video player\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/280361249?autoplay=0&loop=0&autopause=0&color=00adef&portrait=0&byline=1&title=1&controls=1&muted=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/div><div class=\"w-video-icon\" style=\"font-size:1.5rem;background:rgba(0,0,0,0.5);color:#fff\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_medium\"><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>Not quite sure about what we mean? Here\u2019s an example.<\/p>\n<p>Say, for instance, that you are the owner of a content creation agency which specialises in creating articles for small-to-medium enterprises\u2019 (SMMEs) websites. Your target audience will be made up of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small Business Owners,<\/li>\n<li>Marketing Managers, and<\/li>\n<li>Financial Managers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although these people may indeed have Facebook accounts which they use regularly, when they are on this social media platform they\u2019re not in work mode. They\u2019re looking at, for example, pictures of their family or checking out the latest recipe. When on Facebook, they\u2019re not in the headspace to make a purchase for their business.<\/p>\n<p>So, to reach the SMME CEO when he or she is in work mode, you\u2019re going to need to catch them on <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalschoolofmarketing.co.za\/blog\/why-linkedin-should-be-part-of-your-content-marketing-strategy\/\">LinkedIn<\/a>. This is the premier business-to-business (B2B) social media platform.\u00a0 It\u2019s where industry big wigs go to network and find relevant information, products and services that will help them in their businesses. So, if you want to make sure that you\u2019re reaching your target market when they are amenable to listening to your business pitch, reach out to them on LinkedIn and make activities in this arena the focal part of your social media marketing strategy and plans going forward.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What\u2019s the first step with social media marketing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As far as we\u2019re concerned, the first step to building a solid social media marketing campaign is to have a plan in place. As Benjamin Franklin famously said: \u201cIf you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.\u201d The same is true with social media. If you don\u2019t have a strategy or plan in place to guide all of your efforts, you won\u2019t know what the outcome that you want to achieve is. You\u2019ll end up doing a lot of activities but won\u2019t really know why you\u2019re going them.\u00a0 At the end of the day, you\u2019ll have spent a lot of time and money but won\u2019t have any tangible benefits to show for it.<\/p>\n<p>So the first step is to lay down a strategy of what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve it.
